The Wishard Medical-Legal Partnership for Patient Health has received a Preventative Medicine and Public Health Award from the Indiana Public Health Foundation for its efforts to improve health care for children.

The partnership uses an interdisciplinary approach from doctors, lawyers, social workers, and academics to improve a patient's health outcome. It puts in place a system of specialists, including pro bono attorneys, to advocate on behalf of a patient and to intervene in circumstances to obtain better long-term health for the patient.

Baker & Daniels, the Neighborhood Christian Legal Clinic, and the Indianapolis Legal Aid Society helped create the partnership with Wishard Memorial Hospital in Indianapolis. Through the partnership, doctors started referring patients to receive legal advice in January 2008.

The partnership is the first of its kind in Indiana and is based on one at Boston Medical Center. Indiana Lawyer wrote about the partnership's launch  in the Feb. 6-19, 2008, issue.
