Judge gets private reprimand

Four months after the Indiana Judicial Qualifications Commission filed charges against St. Joseph Probate Judge Peter Nemeth, the JQC and the judge have agreed to a private reprimand.

The order approving the discipline was signed by Chief Justice Brent Dickson Dec. 14, according to the court docket. The costs of the proceeding, if any, were assessed against Nemeth.

In the Aug. 14 charges, the JQC claimed that Nemeth made derogatory statements about a litigant seeking an interpreter when she “hadn’t paid taxes for several years.” The charges allege that the statements made violated Code of Judicial Conduct Rules 1.2, 2.2, 2.3(B), and 2.8(b), as well as engaging in conduct prejudicial to the administration of justice.

Nemeth’s term as judge ended in 2012 and he did not seek re-election. He had been a judge of the probate court since 1993.
