The Senate Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee will hear Senate Joint Resolution 7 Monday, which looks to add to the Indiana Constitution the right to hunt and fish.

The amendment, sponsored by Sen. Brent Steele, R-Bedford, passed the Legislature in the 2011 session. If it passes again this session or in 2014, it could go to the voters in November 2014.

The resolution states that “… people have a right to hunt, fish, harvest game, or engage in the agricultural or commercial production of meat, fish, poultry, or dairy products, which is a valued part of our heritage and shall be forever preserved for the public good, subject to laws prescribed by the general assembly and rules prescribed by virtue of the authority of the general assembly.”

It also says hunting and fishing are the preferred ways of managing and controlling wildlife.

The hearing begins at 10 a.m. in Room 431 of the Statehouse.
