Pence gets finalist list for St. Joe judgeship

A letter containing the names of the five finalists vying to succeed St. Joseph Superior Judge Michael P. Scopelitis has been delivered to Gov. Mike Pence. Scopelitis will retire in June. The list was tweaked after finalist Elizabeth Hurley was appointed to fill another pending vacancy on the court.

John M. Maciejczyk, an assistant U.S. attorney in the Northern District of Indiana, replaces Hurley as a finalist. Pence earlier this week appointed Hurley to replace St. Joe Superior Judge Roland W. Chamblee, who retires Sunday.

Other finalists to replace Scopelitis are: Andre B. Gammage, managing partner at Berger & Gammage; Steven L. Hostetler, partner at Thorne Grodnik, LLP; Mark F. James, associate at Anderson Agostino & Keller and a St. Joseph County public defender; and Jeffrey L. Sanford, sole practitioner, a deputy St. Joseph public defender and South Bend deputy city attorney.

Gammage and Sanford also were among the five finalists the St. Joseph Judicial Nominating Commission submitted to Pence for considering in replacing Chamblee.

Pence has 60 days from receipt of the finalists’ names to appoint a successor for Scopelitis.

The commission is chaired by Justice Mark Massa and includes six other members: three attorneys selected by members of the county bar and three non-attorneys appointed by the governor.
