Loss of power disrupts courts in Northern Indiana

A major power outage in Northern Indiana has shut down the federal courthouse in downtown South Bend.

The South Bend Division of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Indiana is closed for the remainder of the day, May 16, Kurt Koch, division manager for the Hammond and Lafayette divisions, confirmed. The electronic filing system is operational for attorneys who need to submit documents.

While the St. Joseph County courthouse is closed because of the power failure, the juvenile justice center and the probate courts are open, according to a press release from the city of South Bend.

The outage was caused by fire underground in the electric grid. Indiana Michigan Power does not expect power to return until Sunday.
