Indiana lawmakers will continue their discussions about various topics affecting the legal profession and law enforcement when two interim study committees reconvene next week.

The Interim Study Committee on Corrections and Criminal Code will meet Sept. 19 for a discussion about the savings accrued by the Department of Correction due to the implementation of the 2014 criminal code reform legislation, House Enrolled Act 1006. The agenda also calls for testimony from representatives of community corrections agencies, probation departments and county sheriffs.

Additionally, the 18-person committee is scheduled to discuss new money available for both community corrections and the Mental Health and Addiction Forensic Treatment Services Grant. The meeting will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Room 130 of the Indiana Statehouse.

Sen. Mike Young, R-Indianapolis, chairs the Corrections and Criminal Code interim study committee.

Then on Sept. 21, the Interim Study Committee on Courts and the Judiciary will resume its conversation about providing indigent defense services to persons charged with a misdemeanor and parents of children who are alleged to be children in need of services. The committee began its discussion of these topics at its first meeting on Aug. 16, but due to the lengthy nature of discussions surrounding changes to Indiana’s civil forfeiture laws, the conversation about indigent defense services was rescheduled for this upcoming meeting. The meeting also will take a look at financial crimes against the elderly.

The Courts and the Judiciary interim study committee, chaired by Sen. Rodric Bray, R-Martinsville, will begin at 1 p.m. in Room 431. The Alcohol Code Revisions Commission is also scheduled for its third meeting on Sept. 22, but an agenda has not yet been posted.
