BREAKING: Senate panel OKs Johnsen

Dawn Johnsen, nominated to be a key legal advisor for the president, was approved 12-7 along party lines by the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee. Also, two of the three Indiana judicial nominees for the federal bench have gotten a green light from the committee.

At an executive business meeting that began at 10 a.m., the Judiciary Committee approved by voice vote the nominations of Jon DeGuilio for the Northern District of Indiana and Marion Superior Judge Tanya Walton Pratt for the Southern District of Indiana.

Ranking Republican member Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama plans to meet individually with U.S. Magistrate Judge Jane Magnus-Stinson, and so her nomination for the Southern District is held over until at least the next meeting.

Members spent about an hour debating Johnsen before voting to send her re-nomination out of committee to the full Senate.

The approved nominees move on to the full U.S. Senate for consideration, and there is no timetable regarding when that might happen.
