A northern Indiana attorney wants to make sure women in her community are aware of the No. 1 killer of American women – heart disease. Along with several organizations, Dana Leon is chairing the Heart Truth campaign of Kosciusko County.

Leon, a partner at Warsaw law firm Rockhill Pinnick, became involved with the Heart Truth campaign through her participating Tri-Kappa sorority. The sorority was approached by the county’s community foundation to help stage an event for women’s health in the community.

The Heart Truth campaign is a three-day event and is free to the public. On Jan. 31, there will be a women’s health forum with free health screenings at Warsaw Community High School’s performing arts center. The keynote speaker at the forum is Eliz Greene, author of “Passion for Life.” Greene also runs the Embrace your Heart wellness initiative.

Everyone is encouraged to wear red Feb. 1 to support women’s heart health awareness. On Feb. 2, the Dane & Mary Louise Miller Foundation is sponsoring “Mama’s Night Out” comedy show featuring three women from Nick at Night’s Search for the Funniest Mom in America competition. The comedy show will also be at the high school’s performing arts center.

Leon, who has chaired the event for the past three years, said it has been well received by the community. In the months following each campaign, women stop her on the street and tell her that because of attending the event, they went to the doctor for what they thought was heartburn but was actually heart disease.

“It’s actually something we can see impacting our community,” she said of the event.
