Students from Munster High School won the state championship in the We the People competition Sunday and will represent Indiana in the national competition next year.

This is the third consecutive state victory for Munster students, who placed 10th in the national competition earlier this year. The team will travel to Washington, D.C., to compete in the national event April 27 through May 1, 2012.

“Indiana students always amaze us with the energy and dedication they give to the study of civics,” said Charles R. Dunlap, executive director of the Indiana Bar Foundation.  “The state finals competition brings the best of the state together to showcase their knowledge of the U.S. Constitution. Most adults who witness this competition leave inspired by the students.”

Brown County Junior High School earned the state title in the junior high competition. Only the high school teams compete nationally.

About 1,000 high school students from the 50 states, Washington, D.C., and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands will participate in the national finals being held at the campus of George Mason University and in U.S. Senate hearing rooms on Capitol Hill.
