State senator appointed secretary of state

Gov. Mitch Daniels has appointed Sen. Connie Lawson, R-Danville, as Indiana secretary of state. She fills the vacancy left by Charlie White, who was recently convicted of several felonies, making him ineligible to hold office.

Lawson, who resigned from the Legislature March 16 to become secretary of state, had been a senator since 1996. Before becoming a legislator, she was clerk of the Hendricks Circuit Court for seven years. Jerry Bonnet served as interim secretary of state since Feb. 4 and will return to his previous duties in the Office of the Secretary of State.

White, the Republican candidate elected in November 2010, was found guilty of six felony charges in February, including false registration.
