Indiana State Sen. Sue Landske (R-Cedar Lake) announced Wednesday that she will undergo treatment for lung cancer but intends to continue to serve after almost 30 years in the Senate.

Elected to the Senate in 1984, Landske said in a statement she will begin treatments immediately at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. She said she and doctors are confident she will make a full recovery. Landske said she has no plans to step away from her duties and plans to continue serving her constituents.

“Understandably this is a very personal issue,” Landske said. “However, I’ve worked hard throughout my tenure at the state Senate to be upfront and honest with my constituents, and in that spirit I wanted the public to know about my health condition. I’ll continue to serve Hoosiers as long as I’m healthy enough to do so, and plan on taking each day one step at a time. I appreciate all of your thoughts and prayers and want to thank all of you for your support during this time.”

Landske represents District 6 that also includes portions of her home county, Lake, and parts of Benton and Newton counties in northwest Indiana. She is assistant president pro tem of the Indiana Senate.
