Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb has appointed an Indianapolis attorney with 30 years of experience to fill a vacancy on the Johnson County bench.

Holcomb announced Tuesday that Peter Douglas Nugent will succeed Judge Cynthia S. Emkes as judge of Johnson Superior Court II. Emkes retired April 28 after 30 years on the bench.

A graduate of John Marshall Law School in Chicago, Nugent is a solo in Indianapolis. He has served as a deputy prosecutor and public defender and has been a judge pro tempore in both civil and criminal cases, including a murder trial. He has also worked with the Indiana Public Defender Commission and Indiana State Ethics Commission.

Nugent will be sworn in on a date to be determined. In an April order, the Indiana Supreme Court transferred Johnson Circuit Judge K. Mark Lloyd to fill Emkes’ seat in the superior court while a permanent replace was sought. The high court also increased Johnson Superior Court’s allocation of senior judge service days in 2017 by 110 days.

Emkes was approved for senior judge certification in March and will hold that status until Dec. 31.
