A bomb threat called into the clerk’s office in Hancock County Wednesday morning prompted an evacuation of the building for several hours. Police brought in bomb-sniffing dogs and searches turned up no bomb.

Hancock County Sheriff Mike Shepherd said an employee in the clerk’s office received a call in the morning from a male asking for the phone number for Superior Court 2. The caller also indicated there was a bomb in the courthouse and then hung up. The clerk’s office contacted the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department, who then contacted Greenfield Police and the Indiana State Police.

Employees were evacuated and quick searches were done of judges’ chambers and courtrooms, and other areas before the State Police’s bomb dogs were brought in. Employees were allowed to go back in around 1 p.m. and told to alert authorities if anything looked out of place.

The courthouse annex near the courthouse was also searched.

Shepherd said at this time, they don’t know what prompted the threat and they are trying to trace the phone number. The incident is under investigation.
