It’s June 30 – the last day of the Indiana Supreme Court’s fiscal year. That means the mad rush of opinions has been upon
us for the last 30 days. It happens every year: the high court releases a deluge of opinions in June (and sometimes May),
leading to a slowdown during the rest of the summer months. Taking a look back at the past couple of years, opinions just
trickle out during July and August. Last year, the court released just four opinions in those two months; in 2006, they released
eight. Typically, the high court doesn't hear arguments in those months.
As of this morning, the Supreme Court had issued 21 opinions since June 1, but opinions from this court have typically been released in the afternoon. If the number 21 holds, it will be the lowest number of opinions released in June by the court in the past three years.
Last year, the Supreme Court released 95 opinions, with 71 of those coming by end of June. In 2006, they released 115 total and 78 of those were handed down by June 30. It’s hard to predict at this point how many opinions the court will release this year, but what do you think? Will the Supreme Court reach 100 opinions this year?
