Michael Hoskins joined Indiana Lawyer in May 2006. He came from the Daily Journal in Johnson County, where he was a general assignment reporter covering courts and legal issues after moving to Indiana in January 2004 from the southeast Michigan area.
The Indiana Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists awarded Hoskins two first-place awards in 2008 – one for an article about long-running lawsuits regarding prison conditions and another that examined the problems of the immigration court system. He also won an SPJ award in 2007 for an IL story about Indiana’s felony murder law.
Before coming to Indiana, Hoskins freelanced for the Detroit Free Press and worked for the Spinal Column Newsweekly after graduating with a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Oakland University in 2001. He also enjoys defying his Hoosier residency and cheering for his favorite Detroit teams, including the Tigers, Pistons, and Red Wings, as well as the Michigan Wolverines. Growing up with an attorney father and now as a member the IL staff, he admits that he must now more frequently dodge questions about when he’ll begin attending law school. That’s not going to happen, as he’s a journalist to the core. Hoskins currently lives on the eastside of Greenwood with his wife, Susanne, their dog, Riley, and cat, Shadow.
