The president and senior counsel for the Southern Center for Human Rights will visit Indiana University School of Law - Indianapolis as a part of the school's Distinguished Visitor Series. Stephen Bright will present "Liberty, Race, and Poverty: The continuing influence of race and poverty in the criminal justice system" at 5 p.m. Nov. 18 in the Wynne Courtroom.

Bright argued this year before the U.S. Supreme Court in Snyder v. Louisiana, in which the court reversed the conviction and death sentence of Allen Snyder due to the prosecutor's racial discrimination in striking the jury. Bright's work has been the subject of a documentary film and two books.

Bright is also a professor at Yale Law School and Georgetown Law and his litigation, teaching, and writing often tackle the subjects of capital punishment, conditions and practices in prisons and jails, and legal representation for poor people accused of crimes.
