Valparaiso discusses reform of drug sentencing laws
Valparaiso University Law School examined the issue of long-term prison sentences for low-level drug offenders during a one-day
conference Nov. 9.
The event, Exploding Prison Population and Drug Offenders: Rethinking State Drug Sentencing Conference, brought together
legal scholars, practitioners, judges and legislators to kick off a comprehensive review of state drug sentencing laws. Topics
of the panel discussions included race and drug laws, comparative approaches to sentencing, and the future of drug violation
penalties.
“The panels and participants brought together for this conference have the opportunity to encourage real reform in
our state and beyond,” said Jay Conison, dean of the law school.•
