An Indiana University School of Law - Bloomington professor has won a prestigious national award for the article he co-authored
with an IU-Bloomington psychology professor about voluntary manslaughter.
Joseph L. Hoffmann, Harry Pratter Professor of Law, and Steven J. Sherman, Chancellor's Professor of Psychological and
Brain Sciences, will receive the Emerald Management Reviews' Citation of Excellence award for their article, "The
Psychology and Law of Voluntary Manslaughter: What Can Psychology Research Teach Us About the 'Heat of Passion' Defense?"
The article was published in the Journal of Behavioral Decision Making, Vol. 20, Issue 5, and questions criminal law's
assumptions about the role of emotion in voluntary manslaughter cases.
Emerald Management Reviews is an abstracting and indexing database that covers every article in the top 400 business and
management journals worldwide. The article by Hoffman and Sherman was selected as one of the top 50 from more than 15,000
entries written in 2007 examined for the award.
