The special prosecutor appointed to investigate the shooting of LaPorte Superior Judge Jennifer Evans Koethe has requested
LaPorte Circuit Court convene a grand jury investigation into the matter.
Michael A. Dvorak, prosecutor in St. Joseph County, asked April 18 for the grand jury investigation involving the firing
of a gun Dec. 22, 2008, at the home of Judge Koethe and her husband, Stephan. At the time, Judge Koethe was newly elected
and had yet to take the bench. Her husband told a LaPorte television station the judge shot herself accidentally while handling
a gun she thought was empty. She was briefly hospitalized and now presides in LaPorte Superior Court 3.
Dvorak was appointed as special prosecutor in the case because Judge Koethe had previously worked in the LaPorte County Prosecutor's
Office.
