Juvenile documentary series wins award

The "Lake County Juvenile Justice" documentaries filmed by an Indiana production company will receive this year's Gracie Allen Award for outstanding TV series.

Calamari Productions, headquartered in Indianapolis, will receive the award from the Foundation of American Women in Radio and Television May 25 in Los Angeles. The six, one-hour documentaries filmed 18 juveniles in Lake County during a 10-month period. The goal was to deliver an in-depth unflinching look at how the juvenile system works. MSNBC, which aired the documentaries in summer 2009, will also receive the award.

The Gracie Awards honor programming created for women, by women, and about women, as well as individuals who have made exemplary contributions in the industry. Calamari president and executive director Karen Grau has created several documentaries based on the juvenile courts that have aired on Indiana and national television stations. She's also won the Edward R. Murrow Award along with multiple awards for programming about children and the courts.
