In a ceremony in South Bend, Joseph Van Bokkelen will be sworn in as a U.S. District judge in the Northern District to replace retiring Judge Rudy Lozano, who is taking senior status. Van Bokkelen has been a U.S. Attorney in that district.
Meanwhile, Indiana Court of Appeals Judge Patrick D. Sullivan’s 38-year tenure on the court will be celebrated today. A retirement ceremony is being conducted in the ornate courtroom of the state’s Supreme Court at the Indiana Statehouse. The judge’s friends, family, colleagues, former law clerks, and special guests will attend the ceremony, which will be followed by a reception.
Judge Sullivan is the longest-serving judge in Court of Appeals history, and the last sitting judge to be elected to his position prior to a constitutional change in the early 1970s. His last day on the court will be Tuesday; Gov. Mitch Daniels selected Marion Superior Court Judge Cale Bradford to replace him.
