The Children’s Policy & Law Initiative of Indiana is partnering with Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law and Marion County Public Defender Agency to help individuals who have a juvenile record start the expungement process.

Law school students along with local attorneys and multiple volunteers will be participating in CPLI’s Juvenile Expungement Fair Oct. 18. CPLI organized this event to provide education and try to negate the consequences of a juvenile arrest or adjudication.

Anyone with a juvenile record who attends the fair will receive information about the expungement process. Attorneys and volunteers will be assisting individuals with completing the necessary paperwork to apply for juvenile record expungement.

According to CPLI, a juvenile adjudication can have negative consequences for years to come. The individual could be suspended or expelled from school for having a record or might have trouble enrolling in college or be denied a military service application.

Many juveniles and their parents are unaware of the potential problems that may accompany an encounter with the juvenile justice system, CPLI stated. No juvenile record is automatically expunged. Individuals must complete the expungement application process in order to have their records considered for expungement.

The expungement fair will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, with no appointment necessary, at these four Indianapolis locations:

Forest Manor Multi-Service Center
5603 E. 38th St.

Edna Martin Christian Center
2605 E. 25th St.

Haughville Public Library
2121 W. Michigan St.

Tabernacle Presbyterian Church
418 E. 34th St.
