Julian Bond, the former president of the NAACP and first president of the Southern Poverty Law Center, will give the Harris Lecture at Indiana University Maurer School of Law on Wednesday.

His presentation, “The Broken Promise of Brown,” continues the law school’s commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the landmark Supreme Court of the United States decision in Brown v. Board of Education.

The civil rights activist serves as chairman emeritus of the NAACP and president emeritus of the SPLC. He is also a professor of history at the University of Virginia and an adjunct professor at American University.

His lecture is at noon Wednesday in the school’s Moot Court Room and is open to the public. Established in 1946 by a trust from the bequest of India Crago Harris in the name of her husband, Addison C. Harris, the Harris Lecture Series brings prominent scholars to IU Maurer. Harris was an Indiana lawyer and president of the old Indiana Law School. He was appointed minister to Austria-Hungary by President William McKinley.

In conjunction with Bond’s lecture is a screening Thursday of selected episodes of “Eyes on the Prize” at IU Cinema, a 14-part civil rights documentary broadcast by PBS and narrated by Bond. He is scheduled to personally introduce selected episodes. The screening is free, but a ticket is required and may be obtained at the IU Auditorium box office during regular hours or 30 minutes before the screening.
