St. Joseph County will receive a $399,000 Department of Justice grant for training and services designed to combat violence against elderly and vulnerable populations.

The county is the recipient of the three-year Indiana Project on Abuse in Later Life grant from the DOJ’s office on Violence Against Women. The grant will be implemented by the Indiana Supreme Court Division of State Court Administration’s adult guardianship and domestic violence staff, working in partnership with local agencies.

INPALL includes training and direct services. Partners commit to attending national training for prosecutors, victim advocates, social service providers and law enforcement. Partners then will train their local colleagues and possibly regional partners. Technical assistance experts also will visit sites in St. Joseph County and offer training and solutions to systemic problems.

The direct services provided through the grant include a community needs assessment, a review of existing policies and protocols, and outreach to vulnerable adults. The grant allows for the delivery of advocacy, case management, and information/referral services in a collaborative manner.

Partner agencies are: the Mishawka Police Department, the South Bend Police Department, the St. Joseph County Police Department, the Family Justice Center of St. Joseph County, the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office, and REALServices, Inc.
