Indiana Legal Services still planning to hire new executive director by year’s end

Still set on hiring a new executive director by the end of the year, Indiana Legal Services Inc. has narrowed it search to six candidates.

The search committee led by Indianapolis attorney and ILS board member Patricia McKinnon plans to have the first round of in-person interviews with the candidates in early November, followed by the second round about two weeks later. By the ILS board of directors’ meeting Dec. 12, the committee hopes to present recommendations for the executive position.

McKinnon emphasized the organization wants to hire a director who will stay for at least 10 years. The agency does not want the top position to become a revolving door where new people are hired every one or two years, she said.

ILS started searching for a new executive director after long-time leader Norman Metzger announced he would retire March 31, 2015. Metzger has been in the top position for 44 years.

The ILS board wants to have a candidate in place by year’s end so he or she can work with Metzger and learn how the organization runs.

Of the total number who applied for the position, McKinnon estimated a quarter were out-of-state attorneys.

As to where ILS will go and what it will do in the next 10 years, McKinnon said the board is looking to the new director to lead and help set the agenda.

Neighborhood Christian Legal Clinic is also looking for a new executive director. Josh Abel, who served for nine years in the top position, stepped down in late summer to join Faegre Baker Daniels. The clinic’s managing attorney, Chris Purnell, was named interim executive director.

The nonprofit did not respond to a request for an update on the status of the search.
