Court of Appeals interviews to be held June 10

Eight judges and lawyers vying for appointment to the Indiana Court of Appeals will be interviewed June 10 by the Indiana Judicial Nominating Commission. The commission will recommend three finalists to Gov. Mike Pence, who will select the person to succeed Judge Ezra Friedlander, who is retiring at the end of August.

Redacted applications for the eight candidates have been posted on the Indiana courts website. Applications also may be viewed in the Indiana Supreme Court Library, Room 316 of the Statehouse.

The interviews are open to the public and will take place in Room 319 of the Statehouse in Indianapolis. The interview schedule is:
 

  • 9 – 9:30 a.m.: Joel M. Schumm, Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law, Indianapolis
  • 9:30 – 10 a.m.: Patricia C. McMath, Marion County Public Defender Agency, Indianapolis
  • 10 – 10:30 a.m.: Bryan L. Ciyou, Ciyou & Dixon P.C., Indianapolis
  • 10:45-11:15 a.m.: Hon. Robert R. Altice Jr., Marion Superior Court, Indianapolis
  • 11:15 – 11:45 a.m.: Steven R. Creason, Office of the Indiana Attorney General, Indianapolis
  • 1:15 – 1:45 p.m.: Hon. Christopher M. Goff, Wabash Superior Court, Wabash
  • 1:45 – 2:15 p.m.: David L. Pippen, Bose McKinney & Evans LLP, Indianapolis
  • 2:15 – 2:45 p.m. – Hon. Gary L. Miller, Marion Superior Court, Indianapolis


After the interviews, the seven-member commission, chaired by Supreme Court Chief Justice Loretta Rush, will adjourn to executive session for deliberations. The commission will consider the applicants’ legal education, legal writings, reputation in the practice of law, physical condition, financial interests, activities in public service and any other pertinent information, according to the court.

Afterward, the commission will reconvene for a public vote on the three finalists. Pence will have 60 days from receiving the list to select the next judge.
