U.S. District Court Magistrate Judge William G. Hussmann Jr. has announced plans to retire Jan. 31, 2016, opening another vacancy in the Indiana federal judiciary.

Hussmann has served more than 27 years in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana. First appointed April 4, 1988, he has presided over preliminary criminal proceedings and a wide range of civil cases in Evansville, Terre Haute and New Albany divisions of the Southern District of Indiana.

This retirement comes as other spots on the federal bench are opening. Judge John Tinder plans to retire this year from the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals. Judge Sarah Evans Barker has moved to senior status in Indiana’s Southern District and Judge Robert Miller in the Northern District plans take senior status at the start of 2016.

Appointments to fill these vacancies must be made by Congress.

However, the judges of the Southern District will appoint Hussmann’s successor. The notice seeking applicants has been posted on the court’s website.

Hussmann is a native of Evansville and received both his undergraduate and law degrees from Valparaiso University in 1972 and 1975 respectively. He began his legal career in North Carolina then returned to Indiana in 1981 to take a job as deputy attorney general. In 1983 he became a staff attorney for the Indiana Supreme Court Disciplinary Commission and, in 1987, became in-house counsel for the Associated Insurance Companies Inc.

In addition to his service on the bench, he is a member of the Judicial Conference of the United States Committee on Codes of Conduct; co-chair of the Evansville Bar Association’s Diversity Outreach Committee and a member of the Federal Magistrate Judges Association’s Long-Range Planning Committee.

Hussmann and his wife, Joann, have four children.
