In January, 2017, Nissa Ricafort will become the president of the Indianapolis Bar Association (IndyBar). One reason this is significant is because Ricafort will be the first IndyBar President who is also a graduate of the Bar Leader Series. This accomplishment is just one specific indicator of the success of the Bar Leader Series.

Starting in 2002, the IndyBar developed its Bar Leader Series. It was created in order to teach, challenge and encourage young lawyers between their third to 10th year of practice how to be better leaders; not just in the IndyBar but throughout the community as well. Over the last 12 years, attorneys and judges participating in the course have been exposed to, learned from and educated by some of the most significant leaders in central Indiana, drawing not only from the legal and judicial community but also the not-for-profit sector and private enterprise in Indianapolis and the surrounding counties. In all, there are now 300 graduates of the series, all of whom are better equipped and prepared to be leaders in their firms, the legal community and in community organizations.

A number of interesting changes have been implemented for Class XIII of the Bar Leader Series. The series will offer more opportunity for interactive involvement of the attendees with not-for-profit providers, more opportunities to learn one-on-one from established leaders how our community is run and succeeds, and more opportunities to have interactive sessions with those leaders and the groups and businesses they control.

Each year, the number of attendees is fixed at 25 young lawyers. After a selection process, the class is comprised of some of the best and brightest young legal talent in our community. Applications are currently available and the deadline for applying is June 22, 2015. If you are a young lawyer who would like to be a leader, or if a member of your firm would benefit from the series, I encourage you to complete the application or encourage someone to apply who you believe would be an asset to the Series and for whom the Series would be a benefit.

As Chair of Class XIII, I wanted to let you know of the positive changes that will take the prior successes of the Series and create greater opportunities for our young lawyers. If you have any questions about the Series, you can contact Caren Chopp at [email protected] or feel free to give me a call at 317-638-5555. You can also find the application form and additional information online at indybar.org/barleaderseries.•
