Attorney Larry L. Morris will succeed Steve Lancaster as the new court administrator for the Indiana Court of Appeals, effective October 1, the court announced Wednesday. Lancaster will retire in September after 20 years with the court.

“I’m extremely pleased to announce Larry’s selection as court administrator,” Chief Judge Nancy H. Vaidik said. “Larry has been a valued member of the Court of Appeals team/family for more than 20 years, and we are extremely proud to see him assume this new leadership role. Larry is uniquely qualified to handle the challenges of the administrator position, given his impressive communication and interpersonal skills, and deep knowledge of appellate law and the court’s workings and personnel. We interviewed a large number of highly qualified people for the job and have every confidence that we made the right decision.”

For the past 22 years, Morris has served as senior law clerk for Court of Appeals Judge Ezra H. Friedlander, who is retiring at the end of August. Morris has a B.A. in theology and an M.S. in human development counseling. He graduated from Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law, where he served as the articles editor for the Indiana University Review, and was admitted to the bar in 1991. Morris is also an adjunct faculty member at IU McKinney and at Marylhurst University in Oregon.

The court administrator is responsible for providing a wide range of services to the 15-member court. Some of the duties include court legal services, budgeting, personnel management, facilities management and implementation of the new digital case management and pending e-filing systems. The administrator works for the entire court under the direction of the chief judge.

“It would be hard to overstate the Court of Appeals’ indispensable role in Indiana government,” Morris said. “I’m tremendously fortunate to have been part of that work for many years, and now look forward to furthering the court’s great mission as court administrator.”
