A LaPorte man convicted of killing a former wife in 1979 has been sentenced to 47 years for killing another wife.

A LaPorte County judge sentenced 62-year-old Joe Jemiolo Tuesday. A jury last month convicted Jemiolo of voluntary manslaughter in the slaying of Kathy Jemiolo. A forensic pathologist testified she sustained about 90 cuts and stabs to her body.

Jemiolo testified he had been refused treatment at a drug abuse center, found himself unable to obtain narcotic prescriptions from a hospital, and arrived home early on June 11, 2013, to find the doors barricaded. Jurors heard Jemiolo then broke in and the altercation ensued.

Jemiolo said he knew what he did was terrible.

Jemiolo was convicted of the non-negligent manslaughter of his former wife, Janet Cassidy, in 1979.
