Lawmakers to study more time for creditors’ estate claims

August 28, 2015

An Indiana General Assembly panel next week will consider a proposal to extend the time a creditor has to bring a claim against an estate from the current limit of nine months.

The Interim Study Committee on Courts and the Judiciary has placed the subject on the agenda for its Sept. 3 meeting at 1:30 p.m. Statehouse Room 130. The Thursday meeting is the first of three next month for the committee. This topic is not among the three the committee was charged with studying by the legislative council.

Other subjects the committee will study include proposed medical malpractice reform and proposals to make available birth records to adoptees  born between 1941 and 1993. The committee also will review requests for new courts and changes in jurisdiction of courts.

Those topics have not been placed on future meeting agendas, but the study committee is currently scheduled to meet on Sept. 10 and Sept. 24.
