St. Joseph Superior Judge Jerome Frese is retiring early next year, opening up a spot on the bench. The St. Joseph County Judicial Nominating Commission will hold interviews with candidates in late December.

Applications for the position must be sent to the St. Joseph County Clerk’s Office by 4:30 p.m. Dec. 11. Public interviews will be conducted Dec. 22 in the conference room of the St. Joseph County Commissioners on the 7th Floor of the St. Joseph County County-City Building.

The nominating commission is chaired by Justice Mark Massa and has three lawyers selected by the St. Joseph County Bar Association and three non-lawyers appointed by a committee comprising the St. Joseph County Circuit judge, the president of the county board of commissioners and the mayors of South Bend and Mishawaka.

The nominating commission will submit five names to Gov. Mike Pence for his consideration and appointment. Only attorneys who live in St. Joseph County are eligible for consideration by the commission for nomination.

Applications are available on the Supreme Court’s website at and in the St. Joseph County Clerk’s Office.
