Geoffrey G. Slaughter was sworn in as an Indiana Supreme Court justice Monday morning in a brief, private ceremony, court spokeswoman Kathryn Dolan said. Chief Justice Loretta H. Rush administered the oath of office, allowing Slaughter, formerly a partner with Taft Stettinius & Hollister LLP, to begin deciding cases and handling administrative matters with his colleagues.

Slaughter is expected to sit for his first oral argument as one of the five justices on June 23.

Gov. Mike Pence appointed Slaughter to the court May 9. Slaughter’s ceremonial state investiture, where Pence will administer the oath of office publicly, will take place August 11 in the Supreme Court Courtroom at 1 p.m. The ceremony will be webcast live at courts.in.gov.

Slaughter succeeds Justice Brent E. Dickson, who retired from the Court in April after 30 years as a justice. Slaughter is the 109th Indiana Supreme Court justice. He was one of three finalists whose names were submitted to Pence for his selection after the Indiana Judicial Nominating Commission interviewed 29 applicants and re-interviewed 15 semi-finalists. The other two finalists to succeed Dickson were St. Joseph Superior Judge Steven L. Hostetler and Boone Superior Judge Matthew C. Kincaid.
