Supreme Court creates senior judge committee

The Indiana Supreme Court has established a senior judge committee tasked with finding new ways veteran jurists can assist state courts.

“The committee shall endeavor to promote the effective utilization of senior judges by the trial and appellate courts, to promote and increase participation of senior judges, and to identify and recommend expanded opportunities and uses for senior judges within the Indiana judiciary,” reads an order signed Tuesday by Chief Justice Loretta Rush.

Senior Judge and former Justice Brent Dickson will chair the committee comprised of at least three senior judges and three trial court judges. Other committee members are Senior Judge Cecile Blau of Clark County; Marion Superior Judge Steven R. Eichholtz; Bartholomew Circuit Judge Stephen R. Heimann; Clark Circuit Judge Bradley Jacobs; Elkhart Circuit Judge Terry C. Shewmaker; and Wayne Superior Judge Charles K. Todd.

There are 103 senior judges in the state under legislation approved in 1989. They are authorized to fill in or replace judges in the event of an absence, complement a sitting judge or participate in court programs. This year, the Legislature expanded the duties of senior judges by establishing a motion clerk pilot project to help trial courts handle complex motions.
