The American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana plans to distribute 1,000 free pocket-sized U.S. Constitutions and hold a voter registration drive on Constitution Day Friday on Monument Circle in Indianapolis.

Joining ACLU-Indiana for the event will be community partners Exodus Refugee Immigration Inc., Freedom Indiana, Greater Indianapolis NAACP, Immigrant Welcome Center, Muslim Alliance of Indiana, Planned Parenthood of Indiana and Kentucky, and the Indianapolis Jewish Community Relations Council.

This event from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. is part of the ACLU of Indiana's 2016 Constitution Day program, which includes all-new online resources for all Indiana teachers who are required by federal law to teach students about the Constitution on Constitution Day.

“The ACLU’s role is to protect the rights of everyone, and we are thrilled that more people than ever are expressing an interest in their constitutional rights and the rights of their neighbors,” said ACLU of Indiana Executive Director Jane Henegar, who will deliver remarks at noon.

“In a country filled with differences, the U.S. Constitution brings us together and makes us all Americans. It strengthens us when we are faced with disregard or ignorance of our rights by public officials and candidates, whose persistent calls for bans on Muslim immigrants and Syrian refugees, endorsement of waterboarding and other forms of torture and disregard for the role of free speech, protest and a free press in a democracy are ever-present in our public discourse.

“With a Constitution in your pocket, you have ready access to your rights and to our shared values as a people.”
