Attorneys and judges across the state will be volunteering in their local communities Saturday as part of the Indiana State Bar Association’s Annual Day of Service.

The Sept. 17 event marks the fourth time members of the bench and bar have turned off their computers, closed their law books and left their courtrooms to do some hands-on work for local nonprofits. They have cleaned up neighborhoods, harvested fresh produce for food shelters and helped refurbish community centers.

This year, lawyers and judges will be volunteering at the Euell A. Wilson Community Center in Fort Wayne, Faith Farms in Gary and Indy Urban Acres in Indianapolis.

In Evansville, the legal community is getting a head start by participating in service activities on Friday. Members of the Evansville Bar Association will be painting and re-decorating rooms in the Albion Fellows Bacon Center domestic violence shelter and the YWCA’s Transition Housing Recovery Program.

“These two agencies are long-standing, strong nonprofits that provide much needed shelter and education to women and children in situations including recovery from substance abuse and domestic and sexual violence,” said attorney Jean Blanton, chair of the 2016 EBA Day of Service Project. “The EBA is pleased to assist both agencies as they continue to provide these critical services in our community.”
