Southern District issues new court security order

Individuals going to any federal courthouse in the Southern District of Indiana will be required to comply with updated security procedures.

Chief Judge Jane E. Magnus-Stinson of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana signed a new general order and public notice for court security Monday. The new order replaces all prior orders and is applicable to all person entering federal court facilities in the district including the Birch Bayh Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse in Indianapolis; the U.S. Courthouse in Terre Haute; the Winfield K. Denton Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse in Evansville; and the Lee H. Hamilton Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse in New Albany.

Individuals entering these facilities are prohibited from bringing in any of the following items:

•    All liquids and beverages
•    Cameras and/or recording devices
•    Firearms and projectile weapons, such as firearms, stun guns, ammunition
•    Replica or toy firearms
•    Bladed, edged or sharp tools, such as axes, knives, sabers, swords, daggers, utility knives or box cutters or similar item
•    Club-like items and striking devices, such as night sticks, brass knuckles and marital arts weapons
•    Destructive devices, explosives or combustible chemicals, such as dynamite, fireworks and flammable liquids
•    Disabling chemicals, such as mace, pepper spray or tear gas, and spray paint.

 Anyone attempting to bring a prohibited item on the grounds or inside a federal courthouse in the Southern District of Indiana could be arrested and will have the article confiscated and destroyed.
