Gov. Eric Holcomb signed an executive order Monday granting parental leave for state employees, a new benefit that will be available beginning Jan. 1.

“The State of Indiana, as an employer, is dedicated to facilitating opportunities for family time, which in turn improves quality of life in the state by strengthening families and communities,” said a press release from the Indiana State Personnel Department. “Benefits also include better infant health and development and increased retention and attraction of the best individuals to serve Hoosiers through improved government service.”

A full-time state employee who has employed by the state for six consecutive months may request and receive up to 150 hours of paid leave, and a part-time employee who has been employed by the state for six consecutive months may request up to 75 hours of paid leave, upon one of the following events: the birth of the employee’s child; the birth of a child to the employee’s spouse; or the placement of a child for adoption with the employee.

Any parental leave not taken within the six months after the birth or the placement for adoption, or prior to separation from employment, is forfeited at the earlier of those two events.
