The Huntington County chief deputy prosecutor will soon transition to a judicial role on the Circuit Court bench.

Gov. Eric Holcomb announced last week that Jamie M. Groves has been appointed to fill a vacancy in Huntington Circuit Court. Groves replaces former Judge Thomas M. Hakes, who retired Dec. 31 as a sex-based harassment claim against him proceeds in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Indiana.

Groves, a 1997 graduate of what was then known as the Indiana University School of Law – Indianapolis, has served in the Huntington County Prosecutor’s Office for 20 years, the last 10 as chief deputy. Prior to earning his law degree, Groves worked as a Porter County juvenile court probation and detention officer.

The Indiana Supreme Court previously appointed Senior Judge Karen A. Springer as judge pro tempore in the Huntington Circuit Court, effective Dec. 31 until further order of the court or until Hakes’ successor was appointed. Groves will be sworn in as a judicial officer on a date still to be determined, Holcomb’s office said.
