The Indiana Supreme Court will travel to southern Indiana later this month to hear an oral argument in Owen County.

The court announced Thursday it will hear the case of J.W. v. State of Indiana, 33A04-1708-JV-01934, on April 20. The case stems from 17-year-old J.W.’s reported suicide attempt in July 2017.

While at the Henry County Hospital, J.W. identified himself as his brother and claimed to be a year older than he actually was. After pleading guilty to false informing, J.W. was adjudicated a juvenile delinquent and was committed to the Department of Correction.

The teenager then appealed, but the Indiana Court of Appeals dismissed the appeal in a December memorandum decision after determining J.W. should seek relief under Trial Rule 60, not a direct appeal. J.W. has petitioned the Supreme Court to grant transfer to his case.

The justices will hear argument on petition to transfer at 9:30 a.m. on April 20 at Owen Valley High School, 622 State Road 46, Spencer. The argument is open to the public and will be webcast live.

Students from several southern Indiana schools will attend the argument, including:

• Bloomfield Jr./Sr. High School

• Clay City Jr./Sr. High School

• North Putnam High School

• Northview High School

• Owen Valley High School

• Shakamak Jr./Sr. High School

• South Putnam High School

• White River Valley High School
