A jury has convicted a northwestern Indiana man of fatally shooting his girlfriend, whose partially nude, decomposing corpse was found in their bedroom.

The jury deliberated for about 3½ hours Friday before finding 32-year-old Jovanni Torres of Lake Station guilty of murder and a sentencing enhancement for using a firearm. Sentencing is scheduled for June 14.

The (Northwest Indiana) Times reports 26-year-old Aimee Giro was found dead from gunshot wounds to the head and lower back on Oct. 5, 2016, the day her father, Juan Giro, testified he went to Torres’ home looking for his daughter and noticed flies and a rotting smell. Police obtained a search warrant and forced entry into the home.

The part-time waitress and Indiana University Northwest student had last been seen five days earlier.
