Valparaiso Law School has tapped associate dean for academic affairs David Cleveland to serve as interim dean after the current dean, Andrea Lyon, steps down Friday.

Cleveland joined Valparaiso Law School in 2012 and was named an associate dean in 2016. He has taught and written extensively about legal writing and is an active member in both the Legal Writing Institute and the Association of Legal Writing Directors. His scholarship has focused on federal court practice and reform.

He received his law degree from Georgetown University Law Center in 2002 and became a litigation associate at Miller Johnson Snell & Cummiskey PLC in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Cleveland then turned to academia, serving on the faculty at Nova Southeastern University, Shepard Broad Law Center, from 2005 to 2012.

Lyon, who was named in dean in July 2014, announced in March that she would be resigning from the top job. She will stay on at the law school as a research professor.

The law school is still searching for an alternative to continue operations. In November 2017, the university announced the law school would suspend admissions for the fall semester of 2018 amid "severe financial challenges" and explore options for handling the dual pressures of declining enrollment and rising costs.

According to university spokeswoman Nicole Niemi, Valparaiso continues to work on strategic alternatives and has not set a date for making any decision regarding the law school’s future.
