The Indiana Court of Appeals will honor retiring Judge Michael Barnes at a celebration Thursday afternoon, just one day before the judge will step down from the bench.

The court will host a retirement ceremony for Barnes at 2 p.m. in the Indiana Supreme Court courtroom at the Indiana statehouse. Barnes is retiring from the Court of Appeals on Friday after serving as a Third District judge for 18 years.
Barnes joined the Court of Appeals on May 22, 2000, after serving 27 years in the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s office and working 1½ years at Barnes & Thornburg. As he prepares for retirement, Barnes said he will miss his staff and colleagues, but will continue to serve with them as a senior judge.

After initially interviewing 12 applicants then narrowing the field to six semi-finalists, the Indiana Judicial Nominating Commission selected St. Joseph Superior Judge Steven L. Hostetler, Lake Superior Judge Elizabeth F. Tavitas and Fort Wayne attorney David C. Van Gilder as the three finalists to fill Barnes’ vacancy. The JNC officially submitted the names of the finalists on May 25 to Gov. Eric Holcomb, who has 60 days to select the next Indiana Court of Appeals judge.

Barnes’ retirement celebration will be webcast live here. Check back with www.theindianalawyer.com  for coverage of the ceremony.
