Subscribe NowA memorial service is set for Monday, Sept. 24, in the Hammond courtroom where the late Northern District of Indiana Senior Judge Rodolfo “Rudy” Lozano presided for three decades, the court announced Friday.
Lozano, 76, served more than 30 years on the federal bench after his appointment by President Ronald Reagan in February 1988. The East Chicago native took senior status in July 2007 but continued to serve until he died on July 11.
The court noted in announcing details of the memorial service that the courtroom and courthouse itself is a reminder of Lozano’s service. Lozano “was committed to the concepts of bringing fairness, common sense, and justice to those individuals whose cases were brought before him,” the court said. “Throughout much of the 1990s and early 2000s, Judge Lozano played a critical role in the design and construction of the beautiful U.S. Courthouse located at 5400 Federal Plaza. This courthouse serves as a lasting memorial to Judge Lozano’s love of the law.”
Lozano earned his undergraduate degree from Indiana University Bloomington in 1963 and his law degree from Indiana University Maurer School of Law in 1966. He practiced law from 1966 to 1988 and was a partner with the law firm of Spangler, Jennings, Spangler and Dougherty, PC of Merrillville and Valparaiso. He served in the United States Army Reserve from 1966 to 1973.
The memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Sept. 24.
