Holcomb appoints prosecutor as newest Lake County judge

Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb has appointed a prosecuting attorney with violent crimes experience to fill a judicial vacancy on the Lake County bench.

Holcomb announced Wednesday that Aleksandra Dimitrijevic will succeed Lake Superior Judge Jesse M. Villalpando, who retired from the bench on Dec. 31. Dimitrijevic has served in a variety of positions at the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office for more than 15 years, including her current role as a violent crimes prosecuting attorney.

She was admitted to the Indiana bar in 2003 and is a graduate of Boston University and Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law.

Dimitrijevic was one of three finalists named late last year to succeed Villalpando. Villalpando announced his decision not to seek retention after the Indiana Office of Judicial Administration filed a petition asking the high court to appoint a temporary replacement for him.

The petition sought Villalpando’s removal for dereliction of duty and for complaining of unsubstantiated conspiracy theories involving court officials.

Dimitrijevic will be sworn in on a date to be determined.
