Indiana Supreme Court Justice Geoffrey Slaughter will kick off the graduation season with his commencement address at Indiana University Maurer School of Law at noon Saturday in the IU Auditorium. The law school will celebrate the day before with an open house party welcoming graduates, families and friends to the Jerome Hall Law Library from 8-11 p.m. May 3.
Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law will then hold its ceremony at 6 p.m. May 9, featuring keynote speaker and alumna Martha Hoover, ’80. Hoover, a former sex crimes prosecutor in Indianapolis, is an entrepreneur and restaurateur, founding Patachou, Inc., in 1989.
The IU McKinney graduation ceremony will take place in the Sagamore Ballroom at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis. Students selected professors Frank Sullivan, a former Supreme Court justice, Lahny Silva, Carrie Hagan and Tom Wilson to perform the academic hooding ceremony.
Jay Tidmarsh, the Notre Dame Law School Judge James J. Clynes, Jr., Professor of Law, will address graduating students at Notre Dame Law’s May 18 ceremony in South Bend. Tidmarsh was voted most distinguished professor of the year by the 3L class, securing his spot as the commencement speaker.
Notre Dame Law School graduates will receive their diplomas and hoods at 12:30 p.m. May 18 at the Hesburgh Library Reflecting Pool.
Valparaiso Law will also host its ceremony May 18 at 10 a.m. in the University Chapel. Cake and punch will be served for graduates and guests immediately following commencement in the Harre Union, Ballrooms across the street from the chapel. Valparaiso’s commencement speaker is still being determined.
Senior Judge Sarah Evans Barker of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana will also present a commencement speech to the 2019 graduating class of Indiana University-Purdue-University Indianapolis on May 11.
More than 7,000 graduates will listen to the senior judge during their graduation ceremony at 10 a.m. at Lucas Oil Stadium. Barker said in an IUPUI article that while she may not have a touchdown dance for the IUPUI Class of 2019, she hopes her remarks will inspire them.
