Cameras permitted in courts to celebrate National Adoption Day

Hoosier families celebrating adoption later this year will have the chance to commemorate the experience with cameras in the courtroom.

A Friday Indiana Supreme Court order announced the authorization of still photography, video and audio coverage of certain uncontested adoptions in Indiana trial courts in honor of National Adoption Day. Electronic coverage of adoption proceedings will be permitted on or about November 23. Participating judges will have full discretion to allow or deny electronic coverage during the proceedings.

Last year, 23 Indiana counties allowed cameras in the courtroom to document the joining of 270 Hoosier children with their adoptive families. The Supreme Court began permitting electronic coverage of special adoption ceremonies back in 2012, with just three counties participating. This year, several Indiana trial courts will join in the celebration.

National Adoption Day — an effort to raise awareness regarding children in foster care — highlights the more than 123,000 children awaiting adoption to their forever families.

That wait can take years, while more than 20,000 children age out of the foster care system without ever experiencing adoption.
