Attorney general may fight health-care bill

Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller is considering options for legally challenging the federal health-care legislation.

Zoeller and other state attorneys general are concerned the bill may infringe upon individual rights and state sovereignty.

The attorney general prepared a report and legal analysis of the U.S. Senate's version of the bill in February at the request of Republican Sen. Richard Lugar. The report found the bill's individual mandate requiring everyone to buy health insurance or face a penalty would be unprecedented.

Zoeller believes there are significant constitutional questions regarding the federal government's authority raised by the legislation passed March 21 by the U.S. House of Representatives. At least 13 other states have indicated they intend to file a legal challenge to the legislation based on questions about its constitutionality.
