the Heartland Actors' Repertory Theatre will perform William Shakespeare's "The Merchant of Venice" Aug. 2 outside in downtown Indianapolis. The play, which is free, includes a famous courtroom scene.
In February, touring actors performed the courtroom scene involving the promise of a pound of flesh to repay a loan at Indiana University School of Law – Indianapolis. A panel of speakers then used the play as a teaching tool regarding Jewish stereotypes and whether the scene accurately reflected how the law would have been applied in the situation during Shakespeare's time.
The play begins at 8 p.m. at the Celebration Amphitheatre at White River State Park and is a part of the park's Family Arts series. For more information, visit the White River State Park's Web site.
