Retired teacher to be honored for CASA work

A retired teacher will be honored Thursday for her volunteer work for Court Appointed Special Advocates.

Harriet "Happy" Curts will receive the Volunteer Teacher Award from Indiana Supreme Court Chief Justice Randall T. Shepard at 11 a.m. in the Statehouse Rotunda as part of the Indiana Retired Teachers Association Appreciation Day.

Curts began volunteering as a CASA in 2000 and says her experience as an educator allows her to work more effectively as an advocate. Curts has represented 14 children during the past eight years.

The Indiana Retired Teachers Association is partnering with the Indiana Supreme Court to recruit volunteer advocates and encourage retired teachers to donate time to children in foster care.

Trained advocates make recommendations to the court about what may be in the best interest of a child in foster care and play a role in finding a safe and permanent home for the child.
